Styling Your Hair with Gel: 101

4RootZ allows you to style your hair and cover up your grays at the same time, but what if you’ve never used gel at all? Let us give you a few tips on using gel in general. It’s super easy and comes naturally once you give it a try.

Styling hair with gel by hand vs comb

You have a few different options when you are styling your hair. The first choice you will probably make is whether you want to use your hands or a comb to get your hair looking great.

Using your hands to style your hair with a little bit of gel will clump it together a bit more, making strands look thicker. It’s a different look from using a comb, which is a more uniform, separated look. It’s really all a matter of preference what you like more and what look you are going for. Any style can be achieved with either of the techniques.

Get your hair wet

When gelling your hair, its always good to start with it wet or damp. Right out of the shower is always a good time to style your hair. It is always the most malleable and cooperative at that time, especially if the shower was nice and hot. Gel also holds better and longer when applied to damp hair.

Rub the gel together in your hands first

Hair gel in the bottle is in what you might call a “dormant” state. You are going to want to squeeze it out and then rub it in your hands to thoroughly emulsify it. Emulsification will activate the gel and warm it up a bit, which will produce the best results possible.

How much gel should I use?

As a general rule, you should go with the “loose change” method of measurement on this one. Use an amount roughly the size of a dime if you have very short hair, the size of a quarter for medium length hair, and 2 or more quarter sized squeezes for longer and thicker hair.

Obviously, 4RootZ is a multi-purpose product. You are going to be using it to style as well as darken your hair, so you may need more or less as needed. You might need to practice with it a couple of times. The good news is that you can wash it right out of your hair and start over until you figure out the perfect amount to use for your own hair and needs.

Work the gel from scalp to tips of hair

If you didn’t know any better, you would probably use a top-down- approach, applying the gel to the top of the head and working it in. This could work for some people, but typically, you are going to want to work the gel from scalp to tip of the hair. Using your fingers, work the gel into the roots and then spread it out from the bottom up.

To blow dry or not to blow dry?

Whether or not you want to use a blow dryer is going to depend on the look and feel you are going for with your hair styling.
If you desire hair that looks shinier, you should allow it to dry naturally. If you are looking for less shine (matte) and a stronger hold, use a blow dryer. Blow dry your hair on a low setting for the best results and work the hair into the desired position as you use the dryer.
