Most guys in the modern world have tried gel for styling their hair. The idea of hair gel seems to have a “retro” reputation, but plenty of us still use it on a daily basis to give our hair the hold we need and a bit of a “slicked back” look when we want it.
Believe it or not, there are right and wrong ways to use hair gel. With this quick guide, we will give you some of the do’s and don’ts. This one is for the guys, but we will have a girls guide on the way too!
This applies to use ordinary hair gel as well as a colored hair gel like 4RootZ that will style your hair and re-color it at the same time.
Getting a “natural” look with your gel
Men’s hairstyles have evolved from the 90’s extra-crispy look in favor of keeping hair looking natural and soft. Guys want their hair to stay in place but don’t want it to look like a helmet start getting flakey on them.
Ditch the alcohol-based gels
Most of the gels in use today (including 4RootZ) are water-based. As opposed to alcohol-based formulas, water-based gels hydrate the roots and keep your hair in place while keeping it soft to the touch. It won’t flake or get sticky. It won’t turn to goo when you get it a little bit wet, either.
Using the right amount for your hair
Hair gel, in general, is a powerful tool that. As our Uncle Ben once told us, with great power comes great responsibility.
When we are using hair styling products, for whatever reason, we tend to speak in terms of loose change. Whether you need dime-size dollop or a silver dollar, it varies depending on how much hair you have and the desired look.
As a rule of thumb, we use a nickel-sized dollop of gel for shorter hair and a quarter-size for medium length.
Applying gel the right way
The “technique” you use to apply gel to your hair is just as important as how much of it you are using.
With 4RootZ, we recommend squeezing out a bit onto your fingertips and using them to work it into the hair, starting with the roots. Since 4RootZ is a colored hair gel, we tend to use a bit less than you might with an ordinary gel. It is better to use less and then have to add more. Needing to dip your head in water is not fun in the morning when you’re getting ready for work, so take our advice on that one.
Summary
Styling with gel can be easy if you approach it the right way and keep a few important things in mind while doing it. You don’t have to end up looking like Pauly D to work a bit of gel into your hair and add style while remaining soft-looking and touchable. We believe in you!
